Phentermine (Adipex- P, Suprenza) is an amphetamine- like prescription medication used to suppress appetite. It can help weight loss by decreasing your hunger or making you feel full longer. Phentermine is also available in a combination medication for weight loss (Qsymia). Like other prescription weight- loss drugs, phentermine is intended to be used as part of an overall weight- loss plan. It is indicated for people who are obese, and who have failed to lose enough weight with diet and exercise alone — not for people who want to lose just a few pounds. Phentermine is a Schedule IV drug, a classification given to drugs that have a potential for abuse, although the actual potential appears to be low. Although phentermine is one of the most commonly prescribed weight- loss medications, it has some potentially serious drawbacks. Common side effects include: Increased blood pressure. Welcome back to Prep Cook, where we test out a week’s worth of recipes so you only eat the most delicious ones! Just in time for your weekend grocery run, we have black bean taquitos, walnut apple meatloaf, cauliflower pizza bites, and more on the menu. Everyone has a different schedule (and different tastes), so you can skip meals that don’t sound good to you or switch them around based on how much time you have to cook when you get home. Make weekday cooking easy and set aside two to four hours on this weekend to prep ingredients (cut produce, mix up sauces that will last, mass cook items you can freeze, etc.). Breakfast. Tofu scramble with waffle iron hash browns: I made my scramble with tofu, but you can easily use beaten eggs instead. Make sure to get your waffle iron nice and hot before piling in the potatoes or your hash browns will end up a bit pale (like mine). Prep difficulty: Hard. Boost it: Top your scramble with a fresh herb sauce. You’ll need to do some prep the night before, but it’s worth the super fast breakfast in the morning (so you can spend more time sleeping). Prep difficulty: Medium. Boost it: Stir in a spoonful of peanut butter (or Nutella)Toast piled high with your favorite toppings: Toast is wonderful. And it’s a tasty base for pretty much any savory or sweet topping you like. I prefer to top mine with mashed avocado and balsamic vinegar or peanut butter. Lunch & Dinner. Glazed walnut apple loaf with green beans and crispy potatoes: A very hearty meal that’s good for when you want some comfort food. For the green beans, clean them and then throw them in a pan with some olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. Top with lemon zest just before serving. Prep difficulty: Hard. Boost it: Add diced mushrooms for extra earthy flavor. Add meat: Use ground meat instead of lentils. Pack it for lunch: Keep the potatoes separate to keep them from getting too soggy. Cauliflower pizza bites and chopped kale salad with lemon- tahini dressing: Anything with “pizza” in the name is an instant “yes!” The salad is there so you don’t feel so bad about stuffing half a pile of pizza bites into your face. Prep difficulty: Easy. Boost it: Make (or buy) more than one sauce for dipping your pizza bites. Marinara and pesto are both good options! Add meat: A simple baked or pan fried chicken breast sliced over the salad.
Pack it for lunch: Keep the pizza bites and salad separate until you chow down. Taquitos with black bean and cauliflower filling: Who doesn’t love taquitos? They’re a crunchy, fun dish that isn’t as hard to whip up as you think. I used Trader Joe’s riced cauliflower to make the prep for this dish a little easier. Prep difficulty: Medium. Boost it: Make (or buy) a spicy sauce to dip your taquitos in. Add meat: Swap some of the black beans for ground beef. Pack it for lunch: If you have a sauce, pack it separate from the taquitos so they stay crispy. If you have trouble sleeping - or know someone who has - this leaflet may be helpful. Provencal Tian: Layers of eggplant, zucchini, squash, and tomato make this a colorful and filling dish. This dish is much easier to prep if you buy pre- made sauce. Prep difficulty: Medium. Boost it: Make your own sauce so you can add in fresh herbs and other aromatics for a flavor blast. Add meat: This will pair well with just about any meat Pack it for lunch: Put it in a container and go! Japanese Udon with yakitori king oyster mushrooms: Making your own tare for the mushrooms will have massively delicious results, but it more work than just using a Japanese BBQ sauce. Buy flash frozen (not dried) udon to get chewy, thick noodles. Prep difficulty: Medium. Boost it: Make your broth a couple hours ahead of time so it can simmer and toss in kombu (kelp)Add meat: Pick up fishcake from you local asian grocery. Pack it for lunch: Pack the noodles separate so they don’t absorb all the broth before you eat. Mushroom ragu: To thicken this sauce and get maximum flavor, you’ll need an hour or two for simmering. You can serve it with just about any starch and veg combo, like pasta with a side salad or polenta with roasted brussel sprouts. Prep difficulty: Easy. Boost it: Use as many types of mushrooms as you can find and afford. Add meat: Toss in ground meat. Pack it for lunch: You just need a container and you’re all set. Slow cooker white bean soup: A perfect meal for a busy weekday since you just toss the ingredients into the slow cooker in the morning and come home to a hot meal. Prep difficulty: Easy. Boost it: Serve with garlic bread. Add meat: Cook up some sliced sausages just before eating and add them in. Pack it for lunch: Use a spill proof container. Have you made any of these recipes before? Did you try any of the meals from last week? Share your tips and tricks in the discussion below. Ways to Sleep Better. Clean your room. Low- calorie diets, such as the Slimfast diet or the use of one or two meal replacements, promote weight loss and can help you keep it off longer. Is It Good for Certain Conditions? Conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure are driven by extra weight, so cutting calories must be part of their treatment. Anyone looking to lose weight on a calorie- restricted diet should work with a nutritionist or their doctor. Since the fastest weight loss happens during the first few weeks of dieting, your doctor may need to adjust any drugs you take, such as insulin or blood pressure medications. Weight loss can make your blood sugar levels drop. Dizziness, fatigue, and other symptoms of low blood sugar may mean you need to check your blood sugar levels more often. The Final Word. This diet works well for weight loss. One of its major highlights is calorie restriction through meal replacement - - and this works for maintaining weight, too. Losing weight may be the easiest part of dieting. Sticking with a lifelong plan and keeping the weight off is where meal replacements like Slimfast and Slimfast Advanced Nutrition shine. One downside is that there are no in- person meetings. So dealing with cheating on your diet and solving problems that happen day to day might be something that you can address in online communities. Aspirin is also used long- term to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots, in people at high risk. Aspirin is a nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drug (NSAID) and works similar to other NSAIDs but it is also an antiplatelet and suppresses the normal functioning of platelets. More significant side effects include stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, and worsening asthma. Bleeding risk is greater among those who are older, drink alcohol, take other NSAIDs, or are on blood thinners. Aspirin is not recommended in the last part of pregnancy. It is not generally recommended in children with infections because of the risk of Reye's syndrome. High doses may result in ringing in the ears. In 1. 89. 7, scientists at Bayer began studying acetylsalicylic acid as a less- irritating replacement for common salicylate medicines. Aspirin's popularity grew over the first half of the twentieth century leading to competition between many brands and formulations. The wholesale cost in the developing world as of 2. USD per dose. Secondary headaches, meaning those caused by another disorder or trauma, should be promptly treated by a medical provider. Among primary headaches, the International Classification of Headache Disorders distinguishes between tension headache (the most common), migraine, and cluster headache. Aspirin or other over- the- counter analgesics are widely recognized as effective for the treatment of tension headache. It is most effective at stopping migraines when they are first beginning. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)) strongly advise against using aspirin for treatment of fever in children because of the risk of Reye's syndrome, a rare but often fatal illness associated with the use of aspirin or other salicylates in children during episodes of viral or bacterial infection. However, the study population were at relatively higher risk than those who had never had a heart attack or stroke. Some studies recommend aspirin on a case- by- case basis. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality guideline recommends that aspirin be taken indefinitely. This is called dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). United States and European Union guidelines disagree somewhat about how long, and for what indications this combined therapy should be continued after surgery. The therapy often lasts for one to two weeks, and is rarely indicated for longer periods. After fever and pain have subsided, the aspirin is no longer necessary, since it does not decrease the incidence of heart complications and residual rheumatic heart disease. One study has suggested women are more likely to be resistant than men. The usage guidance label on a bottle of aspirin indicates that the dosage is . Smaller doses are based on these standards, e. Owing to its effect on the stomach lining, manufacturers recommend people with peptic ulcers, mild diabetes, or gastritis seek medical advice before using aspirin. Aspirin should not be given to children or adolescents to control cold or influenza symptoms, as this has been linked with Reye's syndrome. Buffering agents are intended to work by preventing the aspirin from concentrating in the walls of the stomach, although the benefits of buffered aspirin are disputed. Almost any buffering agent used in antacids can be used; Bufferin, for example, uses magnesium oxide. Other preparations use calcium carbonate. Taking equal doses of vitamin C and aspirin may decrease the amount of stomach damage that occurs compared to taking aspirin alone. From 1. 98. 1 through 1. Reye's syndrome in people younger than 1. U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these, 9. 3% reported being ill in the three weeks preceding the onset of Reye's syndrome, most commonly with a respiratory infection, chickenpox, or diarrhea. Salicylates were detectable in 8. Food and Drug Administration now recommends aspirin (or aspirin- containing products) should not be given to anyone under the age of 1. The reaction is caused by salicylate intolerance and is not a true allergy, but rather an inability to metabolize even small amounts of aspirin, resulting in an overdose. Aspirin and other NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, may delay the healing of skin wounds. In one study, angioedema appeared one to six hours after ingesting aspirin in some of the people. However, when the aspirin was taken alone, it did not cause angioedema in these people; the aspirin had been taken in combination with another NSAID- induced drug when angioedema appeared. In one study, 3. 0 of 6. Twenty had diffuse bleeding and 1. Diffuse, but not discrete, bleeding was associated with the preoperative use of aspirin alone or in combination with other NSAIDS in 1. Aspirin is an NSAID but is not affected by the new warnings. In acute poisoning, a single large dose is taken; in chronic poisoning, higher than normal doses are taken over a period of time. Acute overdose has a mortality rate of 2%. Chronic overdose is more commonly lethal, with a mortality rate of 2. Plasma salicylate levels in general range from 3. Salicylate is also produced as a result of exposure to bismuth subsalicylate, methyl salicylate, and sodium salicylate. For example, acetazolamide and ammonium chloride are known to enhance the intoxicating effect of salicylates, and alcohol also increases the gastrointestinal bleeding associated with these types of drugs. Corticosteroids may also reduce the concentration of aspirin. Ibuprofen can negate the antiplatelet effect of aspirin used for cardioprotection and stroke prevention. It is stable in dry air, but gradually hydrolyses in contact with moisture to acetic and salicylic acids. In solution with alkalis, the hydrolysis proceeds rapidly and the clear solutions formed may consist entirely of acetate and salicylate. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has set a recommended exposure limit in the United States of 5 mg/m. OSHA decision in 1. Salicylic acid is treated with acetic anhydride, an acid derivative, causing a chemical reaction that turns salicylic acid's hydroxyl group into an ester group (R- OH . This process yields aspirin and acetic acid, which is considered a byproduct of this reaction. Small amounts of sulfuric acid (and occasionally phosphoric acid) are almost always used as a catalyst. This method is commonly employed in undergraduate teaching labs. Many drugs are receiving regulatory approval for only a single crystal form or polymorph. For a long time, only one crystal structure for aspirin was known. That aspirin might have a second crystalline form was suspected since the 1. The elusive second polymorph was first discovered by Vishweshwar and coworkers in 2. The form II is only stable at 1. K and reverts to form I at ambient temperature. In the (unambiguous) form I, two salicylic molecules form centrosymmetric dimers through the acetyl groups with the (acidic) methyl proton to carbonylhydrogen bonds, and in the newly claimed form II, each salicylic molecule forms the same hydrogen bonds with two neighboring molecules instead of one. With respect to the hydrogen bonds formed by the carboxylic acid groups, both polymorphs form identical dimer structures. Aspirin acts as an acetylating agent where an acetyl group is covalently attached to a serine residue in the active site of the PTGS enzyme. This makes aspirin different from other NSAIDs (such as diclofenac and ibuprofen), which are reversible inhibitors (Suicide inhibition). Low- dose aspirin use irreversibly blocks the formation of thromboxane A2 in platelets, producing an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation during the lifetime of the affected platelet (8–9 days). This antithrombotic property makes aspirin useful for reducing the incidence of heart attacks in people who have had a heart attack, unstable angina, ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. Thromboxanes are responsible for the aggregation of platelets that form blood clots. Heart attacks are caused primarily by blood clots, and low doses of aspirin are seen as an effective medical intervention for acute myocardial infarction. COX- 1 and COX- 2 inhibition. Aspirin irreversibly inhibits COX- 1 and modifies the enzymatic activity of COX- 2. COX- 2 normally produces prostanoids, most of which are proinflammatory. Aspirin- modified PTGS2 produces lipoxins, most of which are anti- inflammatory. Thus, the protective anticoagulative effect of PGI2 is removed, increasing the risk of thrombus and associated heart attacks and other circulatory problems. Since platelets have no DNA, they are unable to synthesize new PTGS once aspirin has irreversibly inhibited the enzyme, an important difference with reversible inhibitors. Furthermore, aspirin, while inhibiting the ability of COX- 2 to form pro- inflammatory products such as the prostaglandins, converts this enzyme's activity from a prostaglandin- forming cyclooxygenase to a lipoxygenase- like enzyme: aspirin- treated COX- 2 metabolizes a variety of polyunsaturated fatty acids to hydroperoxy products which are then further metabolized to specialized proresolving mediators such as the aspirin- triggered lipoxins, aspirin- triggered resolvins, and aspirin- triggered maresins. These mediators possess potent anti- inflammatory activity. If that sounds similar to the Atkins. The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever by Pierre Dukan, Hardcover. The Dukan Diet. Thirty- five years have passed since my life- changing encounter with the obese gentleman. Since then, I have devoted my work to helping thousands of men and women lose pounds and stabilize their weight. Like all my French medical colleagues, I was trained that calories counted and low- calorie diets were the way to lose weight. Every type of food was allowed in moderate quantities. Nowadays, what I know and practice I have learned through direct daily contact with flesh- and- blood human beings who have constant cravings to eat. I very quickly realized that it was not by accident that an individual was overweight. Their appetite and their apparent lack of restraint were a camouflage concealing a need to find comfort in food. This need is all the more overwhelming as it is connected to our survival mechanisms, which are as archaic as they are instinctive. It soon became obvious to me that I could not make an overweight person lose weight and stay slim simply by giving sound advice, even if that advice was based on common sense and scientific research. Support is what overweight people determined to lose weight really want and is what they need from a counselor or a method- support so that they are not left alone to face the ordeal of dieting, which deliberately goes against their own instinct for survival. What overweight individuals are looking for is an outside will, a decision maker who walks ahead of them offering guidance and specific instructions, because what overweight people most hate and simply cannot do is decide for themselves when and how they are going to deprive themselves of food. Dukan Diet Pdf Free DownloadAs for managing their weight, overweight individuals will admit without shame- and why should there be any- that they are powerless when it comes to controlling what they eat. People from every social and economic background have all sat in front of me and described themselves as being astonishingly weak when it comes to food. Obviously, most of them have found in food an easy . Any logical, reasonable, and rational instructions just cannot stand up to those pressures- at least not for long. During my years of practice, I have seen many diets come and go. From analyzing these diets and the reasons behind their various successes, as well as the efforts of my own patients, I am convinced of the following: Overweight people who want to lose weight need a fast- acting diet that brings immediate results, fast enough to strengthen and maintain their motivation. They also need precise goals, set by an outside instructor, with a series of levels to aim for so that they can see their efforts and compare them with the results expected. However, I have also observed the strength of my patients' resolve at certain times in their lives and then seen how easily they lose heart when the results do not match their efforts. Most of the spectacular diets that rocketed to success in recent years did in fact have that fast- off- the- mark effect and delivered the promised results. Unfortunately, their instructions and guidance faded away once the book was closed, leaving the overweight individual once again all alone on the slippery slope of temptations, and the cycle would start all over again. Once the goal was reached, all these diets, even the most original and inventive, abandoned their followers with the same old commonsense advice about moderation and balance that a formerly overweight person will never manage to follow. None of these famous diets managed to find a way of protecting and guiding individuals during the period that follows their weight loss, giving advice and precise, simple, and effective landmarks like those that made their initial program so successful. People who have lost weight know instinctively that on their own, and without any support, they will not be able to preserve this victory. They also know that left to their own devices, the pounds will creep back on. They need instructions that are simple, specific, effective, and not too frustrating- guidelines that can be followed for the rest of their life. Dissatisfied with the majority of the diets in vogue, which are only concerned with a dazzling but short- lived victory, and aware of the ineffectiveness of low- calorie diets and the kind of commonsense advice that despite all the evidence hopes to reform overeaters into careful eaters, I developed my own weight loss diet. Years of medical practice allow me to consider it both the most effective and easy- to- follow diet available today. I realize that the preceding statement may make me appear immodest. But I will take that risk because it is my most heartfelt conviction, and not saying so in the face of the growing scourge of weight control problems would amount to a failure to assist people in danger. The Dukan Diet takes into account everything that is essential for the success of any weight loss program: It offers overweight people trying to lose weight a system with specific instructions that get them on track, with stages and objectives, leaving no room for ambiguity or deviation. The initial weight loss is substantial and sufficiently rapid to launch the diet and instill lasting motivation. It is a low- frustration diet. Weighing food portions and calorie counting are banned, and it allows you total freedom to eat a certain number of popular foods. It is a comprehensive weight loss program, an integrated whole that you either take or leave. The diet can be broken down into four successive phases: 1. The initial Attack phase is a pure protein diet that creates a stunning kick start, almost as quick as fasting or powdered protein diets but without their drawbacks. In the Cruise phase, pure protein days alternate with days in which you eat pure proteins plus certain allowed vegetables. This phase lets you reach your chosen weight. The Consolidation phase. The Consolidation phase is designed to prevent the rebound effect that occurs after any rapid weight loss. This is a period of high vulnerability when the body has a tendency to very easily regain those lost pounds. The duration of this phase is based on a precise formula: 5 days for every pound lost. The Permanent Stabilization phase. Permanent weight stabilization is based on three simple safety measures that are easy to follow but which are indispensable if the weight loss is to be maintained: The pure protein phase of the diet must be followed 1 set day per week- for example, every Thursday- for the rest of your life; do not use elevators or escalators; and take 3 tablespoons of oat bran a day. These three rules are non- negotiable, but they are sufficiently specific and effective for you to stick to them over a long period of time. The Theory Behind the Dukan Diet. Before discussing the diet in detail and explaining exactly how it works and why it is so effective, I want first to give you an outline of the whole four- phase program to make clear from the outset precisely for whom the diet is intended, along with any possible contraindications. One of the major merits of the Dukan Diet is its educational value. It allows you to learn in real life and with your own body the relative importance of each food group from the order in which they are integrated into the diet. That is, the diet starts with vital foods, then introduces, in succession, indispensable foods, essential foods, and important foods, finishing off with unnecessary but pleasurable foods. The Dukan Diet provides a system of perfectly interwoven instructions that will clearly and directly set you on the right track, avoiding the need for that never- ending effort of willpower that can slowly undermine your determination. I will be giving these instructions to you in four successive diet plans. The first two make up the actual weight loss stage, and the second two ensure that the weight loss you achieve is consolidated and then permanently stabilized. The Attack Phase: The Pure Protein Diet. The Attack phase is the conquest phase. Here dieters are always extremely motivated. They are looking for a diet plan that, however arduous it might be, meets their expectations in terms of effectiveness and quick results and that allows them to tackle their weight problem head- on. The length of this phase depends on how much weight one wants to lose. The Attack phase can last as little as 1 day or as many as 1. The diet plan for this initial phase of the Dukan Diet, great for a fast- track approach, limits food to just one of the three food groups- namely, proteins. Except for egg whites, no food is 1. The pure protein diet of the Attack phase selects and groups together foods whose composition is as close as possible to pure protein, such as certain kinds of meat, fish, seafood, poultry, whole eggs, and nonfat dairy products. Compared with low- calorie diets, the pure protein diet is a real war machine, a bulldozer that, if followed without fail, crushes all resistance. It is effective in the most difficult cases, in particular for premenopausal women suffering from water retention and bloating and for menopausal women. It is just as effective with dieters deemed to be resistant because they have tried and given up on too many diets or aggressive courses of treatment in the past. The Cruise Phase: The Alternating Protein Diet. As its name indicates, this phase works by alternating two diets: the pure protein diet followed by the same diet to which any nonstarchy vegetable, raw or cooked, is added (see . Each alternate cycle works like the injection- combustion cycle of a two- speed engine burning up its calorie quota. In the alternating cycles of the Cruise phase you can eat the authorized . This gives you both complete freedom and an effective way of neutralizing your hunger by eating. Satisfaction through quantity makes up for any lack of variety. Weight Lifting Workout for Over 5. Year Olds. By Darvis Simms. If you are over the age of 5. Weight lifting builds muscle, makes you stronger, and revs- up your metabolism. As a personal trainer, I hear statement such as these a lot. Even when you are resting your muscles are burning calories. So, when you lose muscle mass your metabolism decreases and those extra calories that are not being burned are stored as fat. Exercise from 4. 0 Onwards. Around the age of 4. You can lose as much as 1. Fortunately, you can stop and even reverse the process of muscle loss by weight lifting. Studies have shown that people in their 8. Now that you are convinced about the importance of weight lifting, here’s one of my favorite beginner’s routines. Do the following routine regularly and I promise you will look and feel better in just a few weeks. The Over 5. 0 Workout. In this program, you will work all the major muscle in your body. This routine is designed for you to do every third day. For example do this program Monday, Thursday, and Sunday etc. Alright ladies, listen up! If you’re an athlete, a gym rat, or just a bonafide yogi, chances are you need a little extra get up and go to support your active. Spacing out this routine is important to give your body a chance to recuperate between workout sessions. Weight lifting tears down muscle fibers, so your body needs the proper recovery time to rebuild those fibers stronger. You should do each exercise for two sets of 1. For each exercise select a resistance with which the last three repetitions are difficult to complete. Do this routine for two months, and then move on to the Intermediate Routine. Warm- up and Stretching. Warming- up before you work out and stretching after you work out are two very important activities to include in your fitness program. A proper warm- up reduces you chance of muscle strains and pulls during exercise, while stretching afterwards improves flexibility and lessens soreness. Always warm- up before every work out session. This gets your muscles warm and ready to exercise. You can warm- up by doing at least five minutes of any type of cardiovascular activity at a slow to moderate pace. After each workout always do some stretching. Exercise 1. Lat Pulldown. The lat pulldown is a great exercise for strengthening and developing the upper back muscles that are critical for good posture. People whose shoulders are slumped forward most likely have underdeveloped upper back muscles. First, sit down and adjust the thigh pad to a position that firmly fits over your thighs. Then select a resistance with which the last three repetitions are difficult to complete. If this is your first time doing this exercise, it may take experimenting at several weights before you find the right resistance. Next, grip the bar a little wider than shoulder width, sit down on the seat and place your knees firmly under the pad. Start with your arms fully extended and your chest held high. This is your start position. Now, pull the bar slowly down to the base of your neck while squeezing your shoulder blades back and together. Slowly return the bar to the starting position. Proper breathing is very important, so remember to exhale as you pull the bar down and inhale as you return the bar to the starting position. Exercise # 2 – The Seated Row. The seated row is also an exercise that targets the muscles of the upper back. The Top 3 Muscle Building Routines To Follow For Maximum Muscle Gains! A quality diet that is conducive to building muscle and strength is often the most neglected part of any weight training regime. A Good Sample Muscle Building Diet Plan by Shawn Lebrun. A quality muscle building diet is often the most neglected part of muscle building training. Sample Four Day Program. Okay, now that we have the diet taken care of, let me address the most important part of getting bigger and stronger which of course is training. If you’re naturally thin, then a proper weight gain diet becomes absolutely crucial in your endeavor to gain healthy lean muscle mass, probably far more so than. If you are over the age of 50, weight lifting is one of the most important forms of exercise you can do to stay firm and fit. Weight lifting builds. I like to incorporate two movements for the upper back because these muscles are often neglected and weak in most clients that I see. Weak upper back muscles not only lead to posture problems, they also lead to neck and shoulder problems. Place the pin in a resistance with which the last three repetitions are difficult to complete, again you may have to experiment to find the appropriate weight for you. Sit on the bench, and place your feet on the foot rest. Lean forward, and grab the attachment. Slide back until your legs are almost fully extended and hold the attachment waist height with your arms fully extended. This is your start position. Lift your chest high, and slowly pull your hands to your naval, while rolling your shoulders back and pinching your shoulder blades together. Then, slowly return to the starting position. Your breathing pattern for this exercise is to exhale when you are pulling in and inhale when you are returning to the starting position. Exercise # 3 – The Dumbbell Chest Press. The dumbbell chest press is one of the best exercises for developing and strengthening your chest, and the front of your shoulders. Again, you will have to experiment to select the proper weight to use. Pick- up a dumbbell in each hand, and sit on the end of a bench. The ketogenic diet is similar to the atkins in that the foods eaten are high in fat, low in carbohydrates and full of adequate protein. The ketogenic diet can be used. 14 2500 calorie diet plans you can use to lose weight and/or gain muscle depending on your weight and height. These 2500 calorie diet meal plans work. Place the dumbbells end- up on your knees, then lie back on the bench and position the dumbbells chest height at your sides. This is your start position. Press the dumbbells up over your chest until your arms are fully extended, being careful not to lock your elbows. Slowly return the dumbbells to the start position. Your breathing pattern is to exhale as you press up and inhale as you return to the starting position. Exercise # 4 – Lateral Dumbbell Raises. The lateral dumbbell raise develops and strengthens your shoulders. Start by holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of you. Position your feet shoulder width apart, slightly bend your knees, and hold your chest high. This is your starting position. Bend your elbows slightly and raise your hands out to your sides about shoulder height (with your palms facing down). Then return to your starting position. Be careful to keep your forearm and your elbow at the same level at the finish of this movement. Your breathing pattern is to exhale as you raise your arms up and inhale as you return to start. Exercise # 5 – Leg Press. The leg press is one of the best exercises for overall strength and development of your legs. First, sit in the seat, positioning your feet about shoulder width apart and chest high on the platform. Adjust the seat height by pulling the handle and sliding forward until your thighs are parallel to the platform. This is your start position (make sure that your lower back is pressed firmly against the back of the seat). With your feet flat, slowly press upward until your legs are fully extended but short of locking. Slowly return to the position where the weight almost touch the weight stack. The breathing pattern for this exercise is to exhale as you press up and inhale as you return to the start. Again, you will have to experiment to find a weight with which the last three repetitions are difficult to perform. Exercise # 6 – Step Ups. Step ups are great for developing and shaping your butt. With this exercise you will do 1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand and position yourself in front of a bench. Place one foot flat on top of the bench, positioning your body to make a right angle at your knee. With your chest held high and shoulders square step up through your heel and lightly tap the bench with your other foot before returning to the starting position. Breathing pattern for this exercise is to exhale as you step up and inhale as you step back down. Exercise # 7 – Rollups. Rollups shape and develop the back of your legs and calves. Lay flat on your back, extend your legs and place a therapeutic ball under your heels. This is your starting position. Lift your hips off the floor, and pull the ball toward your butt. Now, press through you heels and lift your hips as far as possible. Then, slowly return to the starting position. Breathing pattern for this exercise is to exhale while rolling the ball towards you and to inhale while returning to the starting position. Exercise # 8 – Seated Ball Twist. The seated ball twist is a very good exercise for abdominal and lower back development and strength. Sit on the floor with a slight bend in your legs. Hold a therapeutic ball (stability ball) with your arms fully extended in front of you. Lean back slightly, pick your chest up high and pull in your naval. Now, turn your shoulders to one side, and touch the ball to the floor. Then turn to the other side, and do the same. A complete revolution counts as one repetition. Be sure you arms stay extended throughout this exercise. Breathing pattern is to exhale as you touch the ball to the floor and inhale as you bring the ball across your body. In addition, Ayurveda promises to improve the health and longevity of just about everyone. Ayurveda is a science of Self understanding. By understanding your own unique nature or constitution, you can begin to understand how you interact with your environment and thus make choices that will lead you toward greater health. Ayurveda defines disease as the natural end result of living out of harmony with one’s constitution. Our constitution is the inherent balance of energies within our bodies and our minds. It describes who you are on the most fundamental level. This unique balance of energy determines everything from our bone structure to our predisposition toward certain health challenges. Our constitution defines what we are naturally attracted to as well as what repels us. It defines what is in harmony with our nature and what will cause us to move out of balance and experience sickness and disease. Because we all have a different balance of energy, Ayurveda shows that the path to optimal health is different for each person depending upon their constitution. The science of understanding our nature or our constitution is the science of Tridosha. Tridosha defines the three fundamental energies or principles which govern the function of our bodies on the physical and emotional level. The three energies are known a vata, pitta, and kapha. Each individual has a unique balance of all three of these energies. Some people will be predominant in one while others are a mixture of two or more. Vata. The vata dosha is said to be made up of the air and ether elements. This means that it has qualities which are similar to these elements. Courses; Course Ordering. Credit Card Payment Form. Canada Orders; International Orders; USA Orders; Mail & Fax Ordering; Ayurvedic Healing Course; Vedic Astrology. Vata is very much like the wind- -it is light, cool, dry and mobile. In the body, those people with a vata nature experience more of these qualities. Their bodies tend to be light, their bones thin, and their skin and hair dry. They often move and speak quickly. When out of balance, they may lose weight, become constipated and have weakness in their immune and nervous systems. These qualities also reflect in their personality. Those with a vata nature tend to be talkative, enthusiastic, creative, flexible, and energetic. Yet, when out of balance they may also become easily confused and overwhelmed, have difficulty focusing and making decisions and have trouble sleeping. This becomes more apparent when they are under stress. Emotionally they are challenged by cool emotions like worry, fear, and anxiety. In order to bring balance to vata, programs are designed which emphasize the opposing qualities of warmth, heaviness (nourishment), moistness, and stability. In the diet, this is reflected in the consumption of cooked grains such as rice and cooked vegetables, as well as the intake of warm milk with spices. Pungent herbs like ginger which increase internal heat and nourishing herbs like ashwagandha bring balance to Vata. Ayurvedic programs include not only herbs and diet but also color and aroma therapies, detoxification, yoga, and meditation. Pitta dosha. The pitta dosha is said to be made up of the fire and water elements. Fire is more predominant, and those people with a predominant pitta nature have many of the qualities of fire within them. Pitta tends to hot, sharp, and penetrating. It is also somewhat volatile and oily. The oily nature of Pitta is related to the secondary component of water. People with a Pitta nature reflect these qualities. They tend to feel warm and have somewhat oily skin, penetrating eyes, and sharp features. They tend to have moderate weights and good musculature. When out of balance they tend toward diarrhea, infections, skin rashes and weakness in the liver, spleen, and blood. These qualities also reflect in their personalities. Pitta people tend to be highly focused, competitive, capable, courageous, energetic and clear communicators who get right to the point. They like to solve problems and when under stress they dig in their heels. They can however also become overly intense and speak with a sharp tongue. They make great friends but feared enemies. Emotionally they are challenged by the heated emotions of anger, resentment and jealousy. In order to bring balance to pitta, programs are designed to emphasize the opposing qualities of coolness, heaviness (nourishing) and dryness. Cool spices like fennel are recommended in the diet along with foods such as raw vegetables, cooked rice, and wheat, as well as most beans. Sweet herbs like shatavari are used to nourish the body while bitters like dandelion root temper the fire. A Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist puts together programs that not only include foods and herbs but also aromas, colors, massage, detoxification, yoga, and meditation. Kapha dosha. Within the kapha dosha there is a predominance of the water and earth elements. Like these elements, kapha tends to be cool, moist, stable and heavy. In the body these qualities manifest as dense, heavy bones, lustrous, supple skin, low metabolism, and large, stocky frames. In addition, those with a kapha nature tend to feel cool. When out of balance, kapha individuals are prone to gaining weight and tend to have weaknesses in their lungs and sinuses where there is an accumulation of mucous. Those of kapha nature are also most prone to non- insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The elements of water and earth also reflect in the personality. The heavy, stable nature of kapha reflects in a stable personality which is not prone to quick fluctuations. Those with a kapha nature handle stress very well, often not even noticing that it exists. They don't like change, are generally conservative, and would prefer to keep things just the way they are. Those with a kapha nature are also comfort seekers. This relates to the soft, watery nature of kapha. Too much comfort, however, can lead to a lack of motivation and feeling of becoming stuck. When kapha is out of balance, the heavy emotions of depression and lethargy result. In order to bring balance to a kapha nature the opposing qualities of lightness, dryness and warmth are recommended. These qualities are integrated in dietary and herbal programs as well as aroma and color therapies, detoxification, yoga and meditation. Grains such as quinoa and amaranth are recommended as well as hot spices like cayenne pepper. Lots of vegetables and very little nuts or dairy are prescribed. Cleansing herbs like guggul and pungent ones like clove bring balance to kapha. We must remember that we are all a combination of the three doshic energies. On the most fundamental level, pitta is our metabolism, kapha is our structure, and vata is the mobility that brings action and life into creation. Without all three energies, we simply could not exist. To determine a person’s constitution, a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist conducts a two hour consultation taking a look at every aspect of a person. This physical, emotional, and spiritual evaluation identifies the balance of energies in a person's body as well as areas of imbalance. Once the nature of the person and the imbalance are identified, the Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist can then put together a treatment program utilizing the appropriate diet and herbs, aromas, colors, yoga and meditation aimed at restoring or maintaining balance.
